NETFLIX UK GIVES LIFE TO BESTSELLING NOVEL HOW TO KILL YOUR FAMILY, WITH SERIES STARRING ANYA TAYLOR-JOY SID GENTLE FILMS LTD TO PRODUCE. EPS ARE SALLY WOODWARD GENTLE, LIZZIE RUSBRIDGER AND LEE MORRIS. EMMA MORAN IS LEAD WRITER AND EP. TAYLOR-JOY ALSO SERVES AS EP ON BEHALF OF HER COMPANY LADYKILLER PRODUCTIONS INC.

Anya Taylor-Joy (Furiosa, Dune, The Queen’s Gambit) is set to star as murderous Grace Bernard, protagonist extraordinaire in How To Kill Your Family, a Netflix series thrillingly inspired by Bella Mackie’s best-selling novel of the same name. The eight parter, announced at Edinburgh TV Festival, will be a first production for Netflix from Sid Gentle Films Ltd (Killing Eve) with Emma Moran (Extraordinary) at the helm as lead writer. The novel itself has sold over 1.2 million copies since its debut in 2021.

Quote from Anya Taylor-Joy: “As soon as I turned the last page, I knew I had to be a part of bringing this story to life. After some (light) stalking of the inimitable Bella Mackie, I could not be more thrilled to be collaborating with the team that is Sally, Lizzie and Emma. I am looking forward to getting our hands even dirtier.”

Quote from Bella Mackie: “It’s been thrilling to watch the characters I wrote take on new life under this magnificent creative team. Anya is the most perfect fit to play Grace: I often think she understands her better than I do. Pairing up with Sid Gentle has been joyful, and introducing me to Emma has made me supremely confident the book is in safe hands.”

Quote from Emma Moran: "I felt an immediate kinship with Grace. She’s the kind of complicated, dark, but utterly hilarious anti-hero you dream of writing. Striking that balance between camp fun and brutal violence that Bella hits so perfectly in the book is a challenge I’m so looking forward to. I’ve never had more fun on a project with such a high body count."

Quote from Sally Woodward Gentle: “I couldn't be more thrilled by our team. Emma Moran is a magical talent with a unique voice and the excitement is already palpable in the writers’ room as Anya, Lizzie and the team explore Bella's rip-roaring, takes no prisoners, satirically pitch-black novel. This series can promise more twists and darker crimes as we go deeper into Grace and the characters around her. Anya is a fantastic collaborator and couldn't be a more perfect actor to inhabit Grace - sophisticated, multi-layered, dangerously funny and desperately intuitive.”

Quote from Mona Qureshi, Director of Scripted Series, Netflix: “We are delighted to be embarking on such a fun and wild adventure, with our fabulous partners at Sid Gentle, and the extraordinary and rare talents that are Anya Taylor-Joy and Emma Moran lighting up the path. Bella Mackie has given us a brilliantly modern anti-hero in Grace, whose darkly humorous quest for revenge will take a scythe through British society as she sets about picking off the family that has wronged her. It is hard to imagine a more dazzling Grace than Anya - and we cannot wait to bring this to our Netflix members.”

Further auspices and cast will be announced in due course.

Sit Rep from Sid Gentle!

We’re delighted to announce the expansion of Sid’s production presence in the UK with new development and production arm, Sid Wild. The company will be based in Bristol with Development Producer Ciara McIlvenny, producer of Rain Dogs, at the helm. With the ambition to work with an even wider slate of talent, Sid Wild will offer genuine investment outside of London while continuing Sid Gentle’s remit – to work with the most original, inventive and entertaining storytellers.

Meanwhile, an update on our productions – we’re keeping busy with both Extraordinary and Rain Dogs in post-production, set to hit screens next year. We can’t wait for you to see them.

Nº74

Production on Rain Dogs, from the brilliant new voice of Cash Carraway and starring Daisy May Cooper, has started filming in Bristol. HBO will join BBC as co-producers on the eight-episode series from Sid Gentle Films Ltd (Killing Eve).

Rain Dogs is a wild and punky tale of a mother’s love for her daughter, of deep-rooted and passionate friendships, and of brilliance thwarted by poverty and prejudice. Told with a dark lick of humour and an anarchic attitude, Rain Dogs stars Daisy May Cooper (This Country, Am I Being Unreasonable, Witchfinder) as Costello Jones, Jack Farthing (Spencer, The Lost Daughter, Chloe) as Selby, Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo (Alex Rider, Chevalier, Doctor Who) as Gloria Duke and Fleur Tashjian in her debut role as Iris Jones. They are our four glorious Rain Dogs; a makeshift swaggerous family fed on defiance and chaos, and a deep but complicated love.

Happy New Year! And what a year we have ahead of us.

We finished filming on the final series of Killing Eve, which will be broadcast in the US on February 27th and in UK soon after. We’ve been working on this series for a while now and are itching to share it with you all.

Before Christmas, we started filming on Extraordinary written by Emma Moran, one of the first UK commissions for Disney+’s new channel, Star. Filming continues in London over this winter, with an amazing cast of exciting new talent and the brilliant Toby MacDonald directing.

And later this year we will start filming in Bristol on Rain Dogs, written by Cash Carraway and starring Daisy May Cooper. A new city for us and a new challenge.

So 2022 is looking like a busy year for us here at Sid.

New Commission!

The BBC have greenlit our untitled series with Cash Carraway. A wild and punky tale of being trapped below the poverty line and doing everything it takes to escape. We’re delighted to be working with Cash to bring this story to life and thrilled to announce that Daisy May Cooper is attached to star.

The show focusses on a young working class single mum (Cooper) living with her ten year old daughter in the brutal lonely landscape of austerity Britain. Told with a dark lick of humour and an anarchic attitude, the series skewers stereotypes of what it means to be working class and underlines the importance of love, dreams and friendships.

Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris will executive produce, and our Head of Development, Henrietta Colvin, will serve as Associate Producer.

Nº69

Ragdoll has started filming

Filming has begun on Ragdoll, a darkly witted thriller adapted for television by Freddy Syborn, from the novel by Danny Cole. Starring Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Thalissia Teixeira and Lucy Hale, Ragdoll is a funny, gruesomely imaginative serial killer thriller that will both make you laugh and keep you up at night.

Six people have been murdered, dismembered and sewn into the shape of one grotesque body — nicknamed the ‘Ragdoll’. Assigned to the shocking case are DS Nathan Rose (Lloyd-Hughes), recently reinstated to the London Met; his best friend and boss, DI Emily Baxter (Teixeira); and the unit’s new recruit, DC Lake Edmunds (Hale). The ‘Ragdoll Killer’ taunts the police by sending them a list of his next victims, with Rose’s name among them. And with those victims to protect, our heroes soon come under intense public scrutiny.

Ragdoll was commissioned by AMC and Alibi for UKTV, and distributed by BBC Studios.

Nº68

We are delighted to announce that Extraordinary, a daring and innovative comedy by Emma Moran, has been greenlit by Star on Disney+. It’s a joy to be working on this show with Emma, who was brought to our attention in 2019 when she won Thousand Films with this very script.

Extraordinary follows Jen, a young woman who lives in a world where everyone has a superpower… everyone except her. Which is sodding great. It’s about being young and finding your way in the world, when all you’ll ever be is ‘ordinary’.

Extraordinary will be executive produced by Sally Woodward Gentle, Lee Morris and Charles Dawson.

Nº67

Development Announcement

We’re thrilled to announce that Sid Gentle is currently working on a television adaptation of the cult horror sensation, Ginger Snaps. Anna Ssemuyaba, one of Deadline’s Top Ten UK rising stars of 2020, will act as the lead writer for the series. We’re delighted to have her turn her hand to this subversive and darkly comic tale of teenage sisterhood.

Gingersnaps will be executive produced by our own Sally and Lee, alongside Clark Peterson and Copperheart’s Steve Hoban, producer of the three Ginger Snaps films. John Fawcett, co-creator and director of the original film, will also executive produce.

Subverting usual conventions and setting the benchmark for leading female horror characters, Ginger Snaps is featured on Time Out’s Best Horror Films of All Time and has been described as ‘the best teen werewolf film ever made’ for it’s unflinching feminist critique of the horror genre. Ginger Snaps has an incredible legacy and we’re looking forward to being a part of it.

BBC America greenlights Killing Eve by ‘Fleabag’ writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Based the novellas by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve revolves around Villanelle, a psychopathic assassin, and Eve, the woman charged with hunting her down. Eve is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade security services operative whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfill her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle is an elegant, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. The two fiercely intelligent women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse.

The series is described as a combination of brutal mischiefmaking and pathos with sharp humor, originality and highstakes action. Waller-Bridge will serve as showrunner and executive producer, alongside executive producer Sally Woodward Gentle and Lee Morris. The series is produced by Sid Gentle Films.

“Killing Eve is a brilliantly fresh take on the cat and mouse thriller from Phoebe Waller-Bridge, a major new talent in television,” said BBC America president Sarah Barnett.

“Underneath the deceptively simple and entertaining surface is a subversive, funny, obsessive relationship between two women, that plays out across some of the most and least glamorous locations imaginable.”

We are thrilled to announce we have acquired the rights to Elizabeth Jane Howard’s family saga The Cazalets Chronicles.

The series of five “Cazalet Chronicles” novels are set between the 1930s and the 50s and chronicle the lives of three generations of the Cazalet family. Sid Gentle Films has acquired the rights to all five books — from “The Light Years” through to the final novel, “All Change,” with the intention of telling the family saga over five seasons.

The deal, negotiated by Woodward Gentle and Howard’s agent Ann Evans at Jonathan Clowes, comes as the novelist’s biography, “Elizabeth Jane Howard: A Dangerous Innocence” by Artemis Cooper, was published recently by John Murray. Howard’s upcoming children’s book, “The Amazing Adventures of Freddie Whitemouse,” is soon to be published by Mantle, Pan Macmillan.

Woodward Gentle said: “Elizabeth Jane Howard is an extraordinary writer, a highly skilled storyteller of understatement and deceptive simplicity. The novels are totally addictive with the ability to floor you with their turn of events. They are set in the middle of the 20th century but the themes of love, loss, repression, sex and family ties are shot through with 21st century resonance. I am thrilled that Sid Gentle Films Ltd. has the opportunity to bring this wonderfully epic, family saga to a new generation of drama lovers.”

Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories is an original British drama commission for Sky Arts and will be distributed internationally by Sky Vision.

Iconic Pulp frontman and solo artistJarvis Cockerhas created the score for the four stories, bringing his unique sound to the series. Neil Gaiman said: “Short stories traditionally do not get a lot of love from television. I’m really excited to see what the team are going to do and make with Likely Stories – they’ve given it real thought and it feels like it’s going to be something very, very special.”

Set in London, these four 30-minute short stories will be characteristically dark and strange whilst also drawing on the deftly crafted characters’ human warmth and wit.  Centring on the act of storytelling, viewers will be drawn into Neil’s intricately crafted world that moves seamlessly between reality and fantasy. Neil himself will appear in each film in an unusual way, with subtle nods to his wider work that Gaiman super-fans will be able to spot.

Phil Edgar-Jones, Director of Sky Arts, commented: “I’ve long admired the work of Neil Gaiman. He is a genius storyteller and an exceptional talent, and I’m thrilled to be bringing these adaptations of his work to Sky Arts. Under the British directorial powerhouse of Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Likely Stories is, in true Gaiman style, brilliantly bizarre and unexpected.”

Sally Woodward Gentle, executive producer and CEO of Sid Gentle Films, commented: “Likely Stories is like nothing else on TV, these utterly unique stories demand visual adaptations and we are delighted to be bringing them to Sky Arts. Each film, although self-contained, explores common themes of human consumption, destructive obsession and psychological cannibalism – all told with great humour, humanity and a completely astounding musical score.”

The four adaptations will be Foreign Parts, a story of identity, theghostly tales of Feeders & Eaters and Closing Time and the life-spanning story, Looking For The Girl, with the first three written by Kevin Lehane. The final story, Looking For The Girl, was adapted by the series directors, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard.

Likely Stories is produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd. for Sky Arts. The executive producers are Sally Woodward Gentle,  Lee Morris and Neil Gaiman, produced by Gina Marsh and co-produced by Hsinyi Liu.

ITV has commissioned The Durrells, a six part drama series written by Simon Nye

“This isn’t a holiday. We are here to live like local people: in joy and togetherness close to nature.”

ITV has commissioned a new six part series, The Durrells, written by acclaimed screenwriter Simon Nye and produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd.

The Durrells is based upon Gerald Durrell’s classic trilogy of Corfu memoirs including the much loved ‘My Family and Other Animals’.

The story focuses upon Louisa Durrell whose life is in meltdown. Her husband died years ago and his money has all but run out. Her four unruly ‘children’ Larry, Leslie, Margo and Gerry are going off the rails. Gerry, 11, is about to be thrown out of school; Larry is a would-be novelist but the worst estate agent in Bournemouth, and the middle two are hitting adulthood like a car-crash. It is the 1930s, and a woman’s options are limited.

Louisa realises she can carry on struggling, marry someone comfortably off but oppressive, or make a radical change and escape… from a domestic pressure-cooker, British weather, uptight Englishness and narrow horizons. This is a rescue mission to somewhere her family can heal itself before it’s too late.

She tells them she is taking them to Corfu. There is fighting and outright refusal, especially when they find out there is no electricity – how dare she drag them off to a Greek wilderness. But Corfu is cheap, and an untamed paradise.

There are worse places to rescue a family – an island fringed with warm, azure sea, the land teeming with wildlife and offering an abundance of oranges, lemons, olives and kumquats. They discover friendship where they least expect it while they struggle to overcome near poverty, the language barrier and the occasional pang for ‘pudding island’.

But Louisa’s biggest challenges come as ever from within the family. Bright and courageous but realistic, she knows they will bring most of their crises with them, and add a few more. Budding writer Larry hasn’t stepped up to be the man of the house and his cutting sense of humour and lack of filter often creates havoc. Leslie, with a mother complex, is fascinated by guns almost as much as he learns he is fascinated by girls. Margo is a walking bundle of neuroses until feminism stirs; while Gerry is endlessly inquisitive about animals and people. Happy to spend hours staring at beetles on a wall, he can go missing for days on epic nature trails and turns the house into a zoo.

Not that Louisa herself is perfect. She drinks too much and has a temper. She is not too proud to break down and weep. Only in her 40s, she says she is happy to be single, but nobody believes her…

Set in 1935, each of the episodes will be written by Simon Nye (Tommy Cooper: Not Like That, Like This, Just William, Men Behaving Badly). The Durrells will be produced by Sid Gentle Films Limited and executive produced by the company’s founder, BAFTA award winning filmmaker Sally Woodward Gentle (Whitechapel, Any Human Heart, Enid). Sid’s Managing Director Lee Morris (Da Vinci’s Demons, Any Human Heart, The Jury) will also executive produce together with Simon Nye. Christopher Hall (Critical, Dracula, Murder on the Home Front) will produce the series.

“Gerald Durrell’s novels are some of the warmest, wittiest, books of the last century. It is no wonder they are so well loved. It is a real treat to be working on them with the brilliant Simon Nye. I hope that his obvious love of the characters and the material will be hugely infectious,” said Sally Woodward Gentle

ITV’s Director of Drama Steve November and Controller of Drama Victoria Fea have commissioned The Durrells.

“ The Durrells is a rollercoaster, adventure drama,” said Steve. “The characters are struggling with the eternal dilemmas of family life when Louisa sets her heart on moving to Corfu. It’s a unique and engaging drama and we’re delighted to be working with Simon Nye and Sally Woodward Gentle once again,” he added.

Filming will take place in Corfu from September 2015. Details of casting will be announced closer to commencement of filming.

SID GENTLE FILMS ANNOUNCES

FIRST DRAMA COMMISSION: SS-GB

LONDON Thursday 20th November 2014:SID GENTLE FILMS, the indie founded by award-winning drama producer Sally Woodward Gentle, is working with esteemed writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (SkyFall) on an ambitious new drama adaptation for BBC One, it was announced today. The series is the independent production company’s first commission since it was established at the end of last year.

The new five part thriller, titled SS-GB, is an adaptation of Len Deighton’s intriguing, alternate history novel of the same name. Based on the premise that the Germans won the Battle of Britain, SS-GB takes place in Nazi-occupied London. British Scotland Yard murder detective Douglas Archer works under the SS.  Investigating what appears to be a simple black market murder he is dragged into a much darker and treacherous world where the stakes are as high as the ultimate outcome of the war.  The series poses the question of what would you do when faced with the choice of collaboration or joining a brutal resistance.

The series has been adapted for TV by one of the UK’s most successful writing partnerships in Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. The duo has previously penned five James Bond films including The World Is Not Enough, Casino Royale and Skyfall.

Announcing the new commission, founder and CEO of SID GENTLE FILMS, Sally Woodward Gentle, said: “I set up Sid Gentle Films so that I could work on projects I felt truly passionate about with some of the best creative talent in the industry. SS-GB is a shining example of that – with world renowned writers working on an iconic title. It’s hugely exciting to have such quality on board for our very first commission.”

Purvis and Wade added: “Len Deighton’s SS-GB is a brilliant tale of espionage that dares to think the unthinkable, and we are very excited to be adapting it for television.”
